I created this lettering for artist vanessa german’s “21st Century JuJu” exhibition. Initially I was asked to develop the website of the same name, which I did (unfortunately, the site is no longer active), but I found the title of the show so interesting and full of great letters that I also asked to create the lettering.
Much of the artist’s work in the exhibition includes repurposed old objects, such as tins, with early twentieth-century lettering. I followed that influence to create lettering that combined some of the intricacy and depth of older styles with a cleaner modern line. The lettering is hand-drawn and traced in illustrator.
Some preliminary sketches are posted on my sketchblog here.
